Around the mid-50s, Chevrolet made a move to develop a light pickup with a “Modern Design for Modern Hauling.” The “Panoramic” wraparound windshield was installed into the forward-slanting windshield pillars together with a new roof structure, restyled wheel openings, and hooded headlamps to create a brand new style. This brought a new perspective to the trucks, they were no longer just simple cargo haulers. Although the Cameo had a standard pickup box, the fiberglass rear fenders were made at the Corvette plant and had the same dimensions as the front fenders to create a smooth and straight look. Chuck Jordan was credited with designing the Cameo which gave birth to a long line of Chevrolet trucks.

List most of the Chevrolet cars at that time, the Cameo features an eggcrate grille and a wraparound front bumper. The Cameo also had more glass than the earlier 3100 Series. The interior design was closer to a car, especially the dashboard. It had a fan-shaped speedometer and gauges. The top of the dash was covered in textured black to reduce the blinding reflections. The standard Cameos featured a comfortable two-tone upholstery. It was built on a new chassis that featured longer leaf springs with a long 114’’ wheelbase.
