A lot of people say that “nothing is what it seems” and “a man’s trash is another man’s treasure”. It applies to a lot of things but nothing probably fits better than this $700 Corvette that is on Craigslist.

A lot of people were oblivious to the secret behind this $700 Corvette. To the untrained eye, it looks like a completely rundown car. It was posted in an ad around 5 years ago.

”SERIAL # X53L on documented 1953 pre-production Corvette Frame. We believe this to be a 1953 Pontiac prototype that was to assume the name Longoria? Info received to date indicates that ZAGATO designed and PINNAFARINA constructed the body for GM in late 52,” the ad dictates.

How the ad is written seems like the seller does not have any idea what they are selling.

“Might anyone have knowledge of some former FISHER BODY executive that could assist in further identifying this automobile?” the seller added.

Time went by and no one bought the car. The problem was that the car was in really bad shape and nobody recognized what it was until now. It was never a “documented 1953 pre-production Corvette Frame.” It was the one and only mythical Number 1 Cunningham Corvette. A long lost 1960 model that is one of the 3 that was modified by Briggs Cunningham into race cars.

Briggs Cunningham was a famous businessman and sportsman who was featured in Time magazine’s cover in 1954 together with the 3 race cars. The cover was captioned “Road “Road Racer Briggs Cunningham: Horsepower, Endurance, Sportsmanship.”

Cunningham drove the 3 1960 race cars in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Numbered 1, 2, and 3. The race cars immediately became fan favorites. Number 3 won the class and made a mark in Corvette history but unfortunately number 1 and 2 did not finish.

After the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Cunningham sold all 3 race cars after converting all back to become street legal cars.

Number 2 and 3 were found a while back and were restored but the Number 1 was still lost. Until someone with a good eye noticed something in this purple wreck posted in a craigslist ad.

$700 Corvette

Before the sale was completed, the true identity of the car was revealed resulting in an ownership feud for more than a year. The battle was finally won by Gino Burelli, an Indiana car dealer. Currently, the final sale is waiting for the official legal statement. The total amount paid for the final sale was kept secret.

Burelli is probably now looking for a Corevette restoration specialist, mostly likely the one who restored number 3, to restore Number 1 to race car look back in its glory days.

SECRET Corvette

Due to Number 1’s terrible condition, the restoration is believe to be finished more than a year and will cost more than half a million dollars. All that effort and money will be all worth it as Bryan Shook, classic car specialist, say that Number 1 will have a price tag of $3 to $7 million, and could be possibly more than the expected price due to the cars history.

The story behind Number 1’s 50 year travel is probably lost in the air. The only thing that is currently known is that the original blue and white race car paint was covered by a purple paint job that was done poorly. The original engine is also nowhere to be found.


We can be sure that this hunk of junk will be worth more than $700 when it goes out for sale.
