With all the recent hoopla surrounding Jerry Seinfeld’s Porsche collection and Matt LeBlanc making it in the roster of Top Gear’s presenters, it seems that Hollywood has a fair share of its stars with such affinity for classic four wheels. As much as they would like to keep themselves off the radar, it seems that being spotted behind a wheel of a head turner does not help. Well, as they say, we all have our own unique addictions and the celebrities on our list aren’t any better.
Here is our round up of the ten Hollywood stars that are known for their love of the classic cars. I know, 10 sounds limiting but these are the stars that shine brighter in their cars – they simply can’t help but flaunt their ride no matter how much they would like to keep a low profile. Please take note: we did not include Seinfeld and Jay Leno anymore since we are so full of them already. Don’t get me wrong: we love these guys and are unequivocally convinced by their motoring prowess. We just want others to be under the limelight for a change.
- Mischa Barton and her (once) impressive 1970 Blue Cadillac Convertible
English-born and New York raised film, television and stage actress Mischa Barton has a penchant with big, beautiful boats of a car. But it could have drastically changed when back in 2011, her ride had a breakdown, not once but twice. It caused quite a stir in media when her favorite 1970 Blue Cadillac convertible was no longer deemed roadworthy.
2. Nicolas Cage and his 1971 Lamborghini Miura SVJ
Nicolas Cage is no doubt, a versatile and well-respected actor. But the same degree of respect may not be so evident with the things that he chooses to keep. Once been placed in hot water because of the ‘ridiculous’ items that he chooses to collect, including a collection of spooky shrunken pygmy heads and a 9-foot pyramid tombstone, his purchase of a 1971 Lamborghini Miura SVJ directly from the Shah of Iran back in 1997 might be the ‘most reasonable’ buy that he ever did – even with a price tag of $450,000.
3. Kate Moss with her 1979 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow MKII
The British supermodel may have been known for her propensity for the nightlife scenery, but she is best known for chilling out at the back seat of one of her classic cars. Her personal favorite: the 1981 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow MKII.
4. Tim Allen and his fleet of classic cars
Perhaps other than Jerry Seinfeld, no actor/comedian comes close to such affinity to classic cars other than Tim Allen. A self-confessed motorhead, Allen owns an impressive fleet of classics housed in an equally luxurious garage. He is pictured here together with his 1962 Chevrolet 409 Bel Air. He also has in his possession a 1933 Ford Roadster, not-so-road legal 1986 Ford RS200, 1950 Cadillac 60 Series, and a 1965 Shelby Cobra S/C just to name a few.
5. Arnold Schwarzenegger with his exquisite Mercedes Excalibur
The muscle man turned governor is known for having the most beastly collection of four wheels any celebrity may have. From Hummers to a military tank, it’s a fitting collection for a man who have seen action and lived to tell about it. So when he got himself a Mercedes Excalibur and flaunted it on the road at less than 60mph, people can’t help but quip, ‘Is that Arnie?’
6. Matthew McConaughey with his all muscle, 1981 Chevrolet Camaro
When toned actor Matthew McConaughey isn’t biking, swimming, surfing or jogging, he’s often found cruising in his 1981 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 gifted to him by his wife Camilla. He once owned a 1971 Corvette Stingray convertible, which he put it up for auction to benefit the victims of Hurricane Katrina in 2006.
7. Patrick Dempsey with his first classic, the 1963 Porsche 356
Perhaps what is most impressive about Dempsey other than his brilliant acting in Grey’s Anatomy, is the fact that he is on his way to become one of the noted actor/racers heavyweights in the same league as that of James Garner and Steve McQueen. He is also known for his deep respect for classic cars that even after getting himself one at the age of 18, even until now, he is unwilling to part from it. ‘The first car I bought was a 1963 Porsche 356. I got it when I was 18 or 19… I’ll never let go of it, it will always stay part of the family,’ Dempsey says.
8. Rowan Atkinson’s ‘Mr. Bean’ moment with his 1952 Jaguar MkVII
Other than being a comedian on stage, Rowan Atkinson is perhaps known for his love for the race track. However, things got pretty sour when his pricey roadster, a 1952 Jaguar MkVII, burst into flames on the street of London on December of 2009. Now, we guess even Mr. Bean will not find this funny.
9. Harrison Ford’s 1966 Austin Healey 3000
After his divorce in 2004, Harrison Ford was lucky enough to have possession of his vintage motorcycles and cars – one of which is a 1966 Austin Healey 3000. He may have a fleet consisting of a jet helicopter and five airplanes, but his favorite ride will always be the Healey, especially when he is just cruising in his ranch at Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
10. British guitarist Jeff Beck and his fancy 1963 Corvette Stingray
Unknown to some, legendary Brit guitarist Jeff Beck used to work in a car body shop to make ends meet before he found success with the Yardbirds. A hard core hot rodder and car collector, he prefers to build his own American hot rods with his bare hands. His personal favorite among his collections is his 1963 Corvette Stingray. So, when he is not busy doing a world tour, he’s often at home working with his other Roadsters and Deuce Coupes.
So there we have it. This is our round-up so far of the most notable Hollywood personalities and their classic car passions. Do you think we missed out on someone? Let us know through the comments section below.
