-Hot Rod Magazine, May 1970-

This excerpt from Hot Rod Magazine back in 1970 sealed the Chevrolet Chevelle SS as the King of the Streets. As the age of muscle cars peaked during this decade, the Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 was the yard stick of muscle car brute force. It was enough reason for GM to lift its displacement ban on midsize cars, as Pontiac, Olds, and Buick responded with 455-cid mills with up to 370 bhp. Chevy’s retort was a 454-cid V-8 that started at 360 bhp and ended at a barbaric 450. This was the summit of muscle car glory. Though there was still debate on who can do outdo the other, there was little resistance against this Chevy dubbed as the fastest American Muscle car of the 70s. The 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 remains a much talked about automobile even to this day. In fact, it remains the standard by which other cars of its league are being compared to.

It was also the most powerful in its glory days with an initial 370 horsepower that eventually increased to 450. The SS 454 had a whopping 454 cubic inch engine in it, making it the biggest engines ever fitted into a production car. For car racers, Chevelle’s 4-speed manual transmission is ideal for acceleration. When the car was first test-driven, it completed a complete a quarter mile in just 12 seconds.

Indeed, in its heyday, it was a royalty among its counterparts.
