When the final season of Mad Men kicked off May of last year, it got people talking about what they will miss the most out of the award-winning TV series from AMC. Mad Men gave us a captivating look of what life was like in the 1960, particularly for those who have set their eyes on the top of the corporate ladder. Beyond its memorable characters, the series itself stayed true in its portrayal of the good life during the ‘60s including the cars that epitomizes them. The Historic Vehicle Association came up with a roundup of their five most favourite cars in the series. These are:

  • 1957 Ford Country Sedan
  • 1960 Buick LeSabre
  • 1961 Dodge Polara
  • 1962 Cadillac Coupe de Ville
  • 1964 Chrysler Imperial Crown Convertible

Perhaps what could be the most significant of them is the 1962 Cadillac Coupe de Ville. Featured on an episode where a Cadillac salesman, cut from the same cloth as Draper, asks what Don drives right now. “A Dodge,” Don admits. Speaking the same corporate language as that of Don, the salesman quipped, “Those are wonderful if you want to get somewhere. This is for when you’ve already arrived.”

For a man on the move up corporate and social ladders that’s a powerful message, and a pitch-perfect car. With its sleek-looking fins, the Coupe de Ville then represented the epitome of vintage class. Purchasing the ice blue car from the showroom floor made for a memorable scene marking the symbolic struggle in Don Draper to reconcile the man he was with the man he was pretending to be.
